THE growth of cooperatives could help unlock Zambia’s economic potential given their diversity in the provision of various products, the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has said. Public relations officer Godfridah Chanda said in an interview yesterday that cooperatives, which cut across sectors such as agriculture, mining and trade, could be a catalyst for growth as they are empower members and help in job creation. Ms Chanda said it is against the background that the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has developed the national cooperative development strategy that will help in accelerating their capacity to contribute to economic growth. “We have seen a diversification of cooperatives from agriculture to mining and other sectors and that has given us Impetus to collaborate with other ministries to accelerate their growth. Ther has also been market linkages where the private sector is now working closely with cooperatives through the buying of goods produced by the cooperatives, she said. Source: Zambia Daily Mail.
