Government and ZCCM –IH have identified 15 sites in Rufunsa for demarcation to facilitate issuance of gold panning certificates to artisanal gold miners. ZCCM-IH public relations manager Loisa Kakoma said the team, which was on site last week, identified and demarcated areas where artisanal gold miners are operating to enable the issuance of gold-panning certificates. “This move is aimed at formalising activities of the artisanal gold miners to ensure that they are legalised with licences and ensuring the local communities participate in the mining and processing of alluvial gold in the areas identified.” Ms Kakoma said in an interview recently. Government , through ZCCM-IH is formalising the gold industry to enable it to make meaningful contribution to the treasury. The formalisation of the gold industry will help in building the Bank of Zambia gold reserves. And Pokela Cooperative representative Josia Malunga commended the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development and ZCCM-IH for issuing licences. “This is a welcome move as all the cooperatives have been operating without licences for a long time.” Mr. Malunga said. He said with ZCCM-IH empowering them with equipment for exploration and processing , they are looking forward to producing more volumes. The team will proceed to Luano in Central Province and Vubwe, Lumezi and Petauke in Eastern Province to undertake a similar exercise. Source:Times of Zambia
